Home Security Tips

Protecting your home is important in today's world. Crime rates are on the rise, and criminals are becoming more clever by the day. However, you don't have to become a statistic. Here are some home security tips that can help you have a safer, more secure home.

Understand the Mind of a Burglar

In order to effectively protect your home and family, it helps to understand how burglars and prowlers operate. Most of the time, home invasions happen during the day while most people are at school and work. Because most people are gone for large blocks of time during the weekdays, burglars see this as one of the best times to break in. And because most of your neighbors are probably at work or school as well, there's a higher probability of entering and escaping the home unseen. The summer months are naturally more popular times for burglars to break in than in the winter months. This is partly due to the fact that most families take their vacations during the summertime.

Look for Hiding Places

Large trees and bountiful shrubbery may be beautiful, but they also make perfect hiding places for burglars and prowlers. If you live in a home that features lots of outdoor foliage, it's wise to not only reduce the amount of cover, but also install a bright outdoor light that works via motion sensor.

Upgrade Your Locks

One of the best deterrents against burglary are sturdy door and window locks. Doors should be secured with not only a high-quality metal deadbolt but also a chain latch lock that allows you to open the door a crack if you need to without compromising your security. To prevent wooden doors from being broken or kicked open, install a heavy duty strike plate. For windows, use high quality locks and place stickers on each window that let potential intruders know that a security system is in place.

Invest in an Alarm System

Home monitoring systems are effective ways to prevent a burglary from occurring. These systems are programmed with a numerical code of your choosing, which is how you turn them on and off. If an intruder attempts to invade your home, a shrill alarm will sound and police will be notified automatically.
