Because most people are gone for large blocks of time during the weekdays, burglars see this as one of the best times to break in. And because most of your neighbors are probably at work or school as well, there's a higher probability of entering and escaping the home unseen. Doors should be secured with not only a high-quality metal deadbolt but also a chain latch lock that allows you to open the door a crack if you need to without compromising your security. To prevent wooden doors from being broken or kicked open, install a heavy duty strike plate. For windows, use high quality locks and place stickers on each window that let potential intruders know that a security system is in place.

Invest in an Alarm System

Home monitoring systems are effective ways to prevent a burglary from occurring. These systems are programmed with a numerical code of your choosing, which is how you turn them on and off. If an intruder attempts to invade your home, a shrill alarm will sound and police will be notified automatically.
